Today I Felt Miserable – And That's Okay

Today I felt miserable. So I tried laughing. It helped for a while, but soon enough the misery came back. And then I realised... that's okay.

Suppressing our feelings is like trying to cram an octopus into a box that's too small – it's messy, exhausting, and ultimately impossible. But if we let the octopus swim away, we both feel freer.

We experience emotions for a reason:

  • Fear keeps us safe.
  • Anger drives us to make a change.
  • Sadness helps us appreciate what we've lost.
  • Joy lets us celebrate and savour life.

An Invitation, Not a Problem

Most of us feel a cocktail of these emotions every day, but sometimes one takes the spotlight. That's not a problem – it's an invitation.

When a strong emotion shows up, take the time to experience it. Be curious about it:

  • Why am I feeling this way?
  • How does it feel in my body?
  • What is it trying to tell me?

And then, simply remind yourself: It's okay to feel this way.
